ABOUT WORLD AIDS ORPHANS’ DAY AND RELATION WITH CANCER
May 7th is distinguished as World AIDS Orphans’ Day worldwide. This day is observed in order to show support and solidarity for the children orphaned by AIDS. It was incepted in 2002 by FBX International, and since then there is no turning back. This day aims at creating awareness regarding the issues affecting children suffering from the influence of AIDS on their families and loved ones. People affected with HIV/AIDS are more likely to develop cancer than the ones who are uninfected. The relation between cancer and AIDS is symbiotic, of course. Three of the cancers are known as AIDS-defining cancers or AIDS-defining malignancies: cervical cancer, Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma. There are chances that some other type of malignancies including liver, anal and lung cancer can also be diagnosed. This generally happens as HIV infection weakens the immune system and reduces the capability of the body to fight infections which in turn may lead to different types of cancers. In the mid 1990s, the introduction of HAART or highly active antiretroviral therapy decreased the risk of Kaposi sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma among people diagnosed with HIV (2, 5). However, it has not yet been proved to be that effective in reducing cervical cancer. Regular screening is recommended to women suffering from AIDS, as they are more prone to developing cervical cancer than others.
