When Cancer Lost Its Grip On Some Determined Souls!

It’s a tale of 4 lives, who were living with a monstrous disease like cancer. But, with their unbeatable determination, they beat this fatal disease. Let’s meet the rays of hope and learn some new lessons of life.

SHUBHADA VARADKAR, The Renowned Odissi Dancer, Who got victory over cancer with her dance.

While performing at an event in London in 2006, she realised that she was bleeding. As soon as she could, she returned to Mumbai and went to the doctor for a check-up. The results were shocking. There was a 10-inch long tumour in Shubhada’s abdomen. She was 40 then. Because of its big size, it was impossible to remove it by laser procedure, so she was suggested to go for a surgery. Besides, it was not possible to calculate the malignancy of tumour before surgery.

But with God’s grace, the operation went well. Tumour was sent for biopsy and on the fifteenth day of surgery, Shubhada was performing with the same zeal. Although it was a big challenge to dance right after surgery but as the show was booked earlier, so she did not want to cancel it.

Till then her final report came which revealed that Subhada had two malignant tumours. One in the uterus and another in the ovary. Chemotherapy sessions were started immediately. It was like an expedition in search of a new life. It was not easy to face those intense and long periods of radiation and chemo. But, she stood firm and today her cancer has gone.

Her Life started dancing on the rhythm of determination!

Shubhada says, during her fight with cancer, dance was her biggest strength. That’s why she never gave up dancing. She was worried that if she will tell about her illness, she would stop getting dance shows at a time when she wanted it the most. As dance was the real force in fighting against cancer. So, she decided to keep her disease a secret. And even when she lost her hairs due to chemotherapy, she used to wear a wig while dancing.

Today she is actively working in her field and has 25 regular students. She organises regular workshops in various places. Taking further steps to success she has authored an eBook named The Glimpse of Indian Classical Dance . Besides, she has also written a book Mayurpankh, which describes her fight with cancer.
