Billionaire Paul Allen, 65, Microsoft Co-founder, Dies Battling Lymphoma Cancer
Condolences to the family. A major loss indeed.
Just two weeks after publicly revealing that the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma he fought into nine years ago had returned, Paul Allen passed away. This incurable cancer he was fighting affected the white blood cells.
Billionaire Paul Allen founded the US-based software giant Microsoft along with another billionaire Bill Gates in the 1970s, he was 65.
“My brother was a remarkable individual on every level. While most knew Paul Allen as a technologist and philanthropist, for us he was a much-loved brother and uncle, and an exceptional friend,” Allen’s sister Jody said in a statement.
“Paul’s family and friends were blessed to experience his wit, warmth, his generosity and deep concern… At this time of loss and grief for us — and so many others — we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day.”
He looked after the business and charitable works at Vulcan Inc which he launched after leaving Microsoft in 1983. A statement from Vulcan read: “All of us who had the honor of working with Paul feel inexpressible loss today, He possessed a remarkable intellect and a passion to solve some of the world’s most difficult problems, with the conviction that creative thinking and new approaches could make profound and lasting impact”
Apart from being a part of the Major League Soccer team the Seattle Sounders, he owned professional US sports teams the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. He was also active with the Allen Institutes of scientific research and supported the latest developments in the Artificial Intelligence and frontier tech enhancements.
According to Forbes, his estimated net worth is close to $20.3 billion. Allen ranked amongst the world’s wealthiest individuals and most recently he was on the 44th rank of the recognized Forbes Billionaire’s list.
As said by Microsoft, Allen’s “contributions to our company, our industry and to our community are indispensable.”
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said, “As co-founder of Microsoft, in his own quiet and persistent way, he created magical products, experiences and institutions. And in doing so, he changed the world.”
Bill Gates, who co-founded Microsoft with Allen, said that “personal computing would not have existed without him”: He continued by that he heartbroken by the passing of one of his oldest & dearest friends. Right from their early days at Lakeside School to their partnership in Microsoft to the joint philanthropist works all over the years Paul was a true partner & a dear friend. Paul used his intellect & compassion to better people’s lives and building firm communities in Seattle & all around the world. Paul used to say, “If it has the potential to do good, then we should do it.” That’s the kind of person he was., quoted Gates.
