WHAT CANCER WILL TEACH YOU? THE FEELING OF SURVIVORS
The doctors know well about what to do and what not to do but you won’t deny that fact that a cancer survivor’s real experience can benefit you and make you aware about all the phases, cures and preventions. After having a word with some of our heroes who fought cancer bravely and now are leading a healthy life we have sum up few things which can help people suffering from cancer and help them adjust to the aftermath phase of cancer.
1. Your appetite isn’t what it used to be
You will waste tons of food and feel guilty about spending money on something that ends up in the trash. But nothing tastes the way it did before you got sick.
2. No one dies from cancer.
Yes, you read that right. Proper diagnosis, treatment, and prevention can actually make you a survivor. However, it’s possible that it might kill you only if you let it happen.
3. You get to know your mates.
Go out in public with your scars and a shiny bald head and look at people stare at you. You get to know who is your real friend. Who plays the concerned card and who actually plays the guitar for you without saying that he is concerned. Hold the genuine people close: they’ll be there long even after the diagnosis.
Anyone can be diagnosed with cancer anytime. Cancer doesn’t care how old you are. It’s completely wrong that cancer affects people who smoke or drink (though your chances are high in this case). Nor if you don’t exercise every day or do nothing to harm your body. None of that really matters but that doesn’t mean you should start doing it.
5. You know your body better than anyone else.
Despite all that sweet words you listen from the Doctors, friends, relatives and in fact your family you go for months wondering why you have a cough that’s not being well? or why’s there fatigue in you more than others? You can skip them and mention them as nothing serious while popping some pills and expecting it to get fixed because note everyone can think of getting Cancer due to a sore thorat or a cough. Doctors might tell you that you have bronchitis or may suggest an X-Ray or a CT Scan that’s when you will find out the real reason. But you knew it the first place, that there was a problem, right?
Chemo sessions are painful and with each passing session, it becomes more. You might have heard, read in books or watched in movies about that. But if you have to do it, you have to do it and there’s no escape. The Chemo’s kill you while keeps you alive the same time, so you can’t complain, it will make you feel very weak and sick and powerless that there’s nothing you can do but lay on the bed and cry. But you know what? Fight through the pain. It’ll get better. Don’t worry about your hair as the cells recover and grow fast. They will definitely fall out during chemo sessions but don’t stress on that as your baldness is a symbol that you are a survivor fighting a battle, and this symbol means that you’re winning.
7. Needles will be your favorite metal and you’ll get attached to your doctors and nurses.
Regardless of how you are scared of the needles or not before your diagnosis trust me you will be used to them. You’ll be pierced by them so many times that it will be a habit. The hospital will be your new best place and needles will be your new top to play with. The doctors, nurses will become close to you, a second family or more than that as they’re saving your life.
You’ll see your friends progress, grow financially, get married and settle while you will be on the bed waiting for the next needle to be poked into your skin. You’ll see their Instagram feeds full of happenings as they go out and see the world and all of the wonderful things there. You’ll feel limited and stagnant and unsuccessful. But hey don’t complain just remember that it wasn’t your fault, life isn’t over and there more in stores than you might just think. Though your timing got a little messed up, or it slowed down but while others life was witnessing the change you were seeing them go through it. Don’t forget that when times are hardest they best perform.
Diagnosed with Cancer is the hardest, thing you will ever hear. It will change everything. It sounds pretty normal to say things like “stay strong,” “stay positive,” and “keep your head up.” While no one actually has a clue about what’s happening. You will learn that it’s a long, tough, punishing journey, but the fight is worth every MOMENT!
