Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is cancer which arises from the plasma cells, made in the bone marrow. (The bone marrow is where all blood cells are made.) The Plasma cells form part of your immune system the normal plasma cells produce antibodies well known as immunoglobulins and helps fight infection. Unlike other cancers, the myeloma doesn’t exist as a tumor or a lump.
In myeloma, the plasma cells become dysfunctional, multiplying uncontrollably and releasing only one type of antibody known as paraprotein, which is useless for the human body. Due to the measurement of this paraprotein myeloma is diagnosed and monitored.
The symptoms and complications related to myeloma are caused by the build-up of the dysfunctional plasma cells in the bone marrow and the presence of the paraprotein in the blood or urine. It affects many parts of the human body hence causing multiple myeloma where the bone marrow is normally active in an adult, within bones of spine, skull, pelvis, rib cage, long bones of arms, legs and areas around shoulders and hips.
